Join Belladonna Bushcraft and Birchwood Learning in the woods to discover the bread and butter of outdoor living skills.

Who is the day for?
If you have ever wondered and wanted to; carve a utensil when you’ve forgotten one, make your own tent pegs when you’ve lost the metal ones, rig up a quick tarp to shelter from the rain, be able to light your garden fire bowl/chimnea/BBQ without using lighter fluid or wondered what stinging nettles are good for, then this is the course for you!

Bread & Butter is aimed at anyone who’s ever thought that they’d like to have a go at outdoor things but have never had the opportunity and/or confidence. We believe that spending time outdoors with nature should be simple, sustainable and feel good. The day will cover some of the essential skills needed to spend time outdoors more comfortably and present them in a simple and usable way. We try to ‘learn a little and laugh a lot!

Anyone over the age of 14 years, who want to establish a solid foundation to their outdoor skills are welcome. Under 18’s will need to be accompanied by a participating adult.

What will we be doing?
The day is a gentle introduction to nature awareness and useful outdoor skills. The day will include:

  • ‘Is Hazel nuts and Birch bright?’ – Introduction to useful species.
  • ‘Ouch, that’s sharp!’ – Tool use essentials.
  • Get knotted, and look good in canvas – Rigging effective tarp and line shelters.
  • Brewing up a storm in many tea cups – Using Storm Kettles.
  • Does it take a bright spark to light a fire? – Successful fire lighting and management.
  • ‘Can you guess what it is yet?!’ – Making simple handy craft items (tent pegs, butter knife etc).
  • Finish the day by taking part in the Belladonna Bootyfully Baked Bannock Bread challenge!

Every participant will receive a Belladonna Bushcraft ‘Bread & Butter’ Booklet to take home, and there will be a chance to taste some wild camp cooking throughout the day.

Where are we?
On this occasion we are lucky enough to be able to spend some time in the beautiful woodland & wetland of Sculthorpe Moor Reserve (near Fakenham – just off the A148), owned and managed by the Hawk and Owl Trust.

Please visit The Hawk and Owl Trusts website for a map and further information here.

What’s there?
We will be working from our home camp within the woods for most of the day. We will have a simple shelter and use campfires to make hot drinks and snacks throughout the day. Although we will not be using any buildings during the day, there is access to the visitor centre with flushing toilets, handwashing facilities and drinking water. Participants will need to bring a packed lunch and water bottle for the day. As we will be spending all day outside, you will need to bring appropriate clothing and footwear. Please see below for a kit list to help you plan your day.
