I love playing with tools and knots to make stuff in the woods!

Although sometimes I wish I had more time to practice and play. There never seems to be enough time in the day, (with a 3 year old running rings round me!) and the practical stuff always seems to drop off the list first.

Then I got thinking – practicing practical skills are an essential part of the Forest School practitioners role. They should be a priority!

If we don’t have these skills practiced enough – best case, it’s going to limit what we can offer the learners in our programmes, and therefore limit their learning and development. Worst case, we could be exposing people to unsafe practices.

We need to give ourselves permission to pick up our knife and get whittling (or green rope and get knotting!) so we feel confident and capable to share these skills with others.

So here’s me giving you permission to play with your practical skills! Get out and whittle a spoon or rig a rope swing, make a candle holder, macrame tree or whatever takes your fancy!

There are lots of books and videos out there that give tips and techniques for making all sorts of things but if you’re looking for some face to face CPD I’m offering some half day ‘Skills for Forest School’ workshops in Norfolk (UK) to celebrate the winter season on Saturday 25th November 2023:

  • ‘No I-Deer!’ – Practice tool work to make a deer, learn ID skills and hear a story for seasonal cheer!
  • ‘Crafty Christmas Trees’ – Join us to celebrate winter – Create a range of crafted trees, and play games to recognize conifer species!

Both 2.5 hours sessions will give you seasonal inspiration and practical skills you can use with your Forest School or Outdoor Learning groups. As well as opportunities to connect and share with other practitioners in real life. Find out more and book your place for just £30 per session (or £55 for both).
