Date: Saturday 18th August 2012

Time: 10.00am – 5.00pm

Location: Holt Hall Environmental and Outdoor Learning Centre, Holt, Norfolk

Cost: Special rainy summer price – £25 per person!

You are invited to join Belladonna Bushcraft and Birchwood Learning for a woodland tea party with a difference. Develop and use your outdoor living skills to prepare afternoon tea and celebrate in style.

Who is the day for?
If you have already spent a bit of time in the woods and now want to develop and try new skills then join us for ‘Tea and Cake’! If you already know about tool safety; have a knife but don’t know what to do with it; can build a successful fire but would like to know some different ways of lighting it and ways of cooking on it; know a few useful wild species and want to add some more to the list; would like to learn how to make water safe when you’re gasping for a cup of tea, then ‘Tea and Cake’ is for you!

Tea and Cake is aimed at people who already have beginnings in some of the key outdoor skills (basic knife & saw use, handy knots, fire management, a bit of ID) and want to add to their knowledge and techniques. Perhaps you have already done our ‘Bread and Butter’ course, are a Forest School Leader or Assistant, scout or guide leader, outdoor educator, or Ray Mears hobbyist and want to add to your repertoire!  Please note that the skills covered in ‘Tea and Cake’ are progressive to ‘Bread and Butter’ and will assume that participants already have an introductory level of understanding. If you have not attended ‘Bread and Butter’ you are still welcome to book on, however you will get more from the day if you have already some basic outdoor skills. The day is aimed to be progressive but not advanced and we do try to ‘learn a little and laugh a lot!’

Anyone over the age of 14 years, who want to develop their outdoor skills are welcome. Under 18’s will need to be accompanied by a participating adult.

What will we be doing?
The day is designed to develop nature awareness and useful outdoor skills. The day will include:

  • ‘Is Hazel nuts?’ – Introduction to selecting and harvesting resources.
  • ‘Head’s up!’ – Rope throwing, winching and knot techniques.
  • There’s more than one way to cut yourself! – Progressive knife techniques.
  • ‘Can you guess what it is yet?!’ – Making simple handy craft items (pot hangers, simple teaspoons, party decorations etc).
  • Drinking ditchwater! – Sourcing water and making it safe to drink.
  • Sticks and stones – Fire lighting techniques including flint and steel.
  • ‘I’ll huff and I’ll puff…..!’ – Introduction to tinders and using bundles effectively to create flame.
  • ‘You can live on it, but it tastes like…..!’ – Introduction to camp cooking.
  • Finish the day by celebrating woodland style with the Belladonna Bake-off and tasty tea party!

Every participant will receive a Belladonna Bushcraft ‘Tea & Cake’ Booklet to take home, and there will be a chance to taste some camp cooking throughout the day.

Where are we?
On this occasion we are lucky enough to be able to spend some time in the beautiful woodland of Holt Hall Environmental and Outdoor Learning Centre, on the outskirts of Holt, in North Norfolk. This centre is owned by Norfolk County Councils’ Outdoor Learning team and is a residential centre for schools to visit and undertake outdoor learning.

Please visit Holt Hall’s website for a map and further information here.

What’s there?
We will be working from our home camp within the woods for most of the day. We will have a simple shelter and use campfires to make hot drinks and snacks throughout the day. Although we will not be using any buildings during the day, there is access to flushing toilets, handwashing facilities and drinking water. Participants will need to bring a packed lunch and water bottle for the day. As we will be spending all day outside, you will need to bring appropriate clothing and footwear. Please see below for a kit list to help you plan your day.
